How to Choose Bathroom Tiles That Fit Your Needs

Choosing bathrooms tiles can be a daunting process. With so many materials, styles and sizes available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. If you’re struggling to choose your tiles, then check out these tips from our bathroom renovation experts.

Start with your dream tile

We all have a tile that we fall in love with at first sight. Use this as your starting point. No matter how much it costs, or if it’s impractical, choosing your first tile will help guide the rest of your decision.

Build your design

Try to incorporate your dream tile into your design. If it’s expensive or impractical, only use it in a small section of the design, such as a border or strip to accent another tile. If your dream tile is plain looking, consider pairing it with different styles of tiles to highlight it. Try to limit yourself to a maximum of three different tiles.

Think in zones

Typically, you designate different tiles for different zones of your bathroom. A basic rule of thumb is: one tile for your floor, one as your main wall tile and shower/ bath surrounds and then an accent tile to draw the eye.

Consider maintenance

Nobody likes cleaning tiles, so make sure the tiles you choose are easy to clean. Porcelain or ceramic tiles are usually the easier to clean. While natural stone is a beautiful addition to bathrooms, these are high maintenance and will require sealing. If you want to use them, try limiting them to the dryer areas of your bathroom.

Consider scale

If you really love a tile and want to stick with it without your walls and floors blending, then opt for the same tile but in different sizes or scales. For example, place the larger tiles on your walls and then use smaller scale tiles on your bathroom floor and even smaller scale tiles in your shower area. This will also provide extra slip resistance.
