Let the Light In – Tips for Bathroom Lighting

Essentially there are two types of lighting for your bathroom:

  1. Natural light
  2. Artificial light

Ideally you will want to take full advantage of both types of lighting, so if you are planning a bathroom renovation, this post will offer some tips on how to get the most out of your bathroom lighting.

Let the Natural Light In

Obviously this will only apply to daylight hours, but letting in as much natural light as possible will really give your bathroom a bright, open and airy look and feel. A common trend in bathroom designs at the moment is the indoor/outdoor bathroom idea, where the bathroom almost feels likes it’s situated outdoors. This is accomplished by either actually building it in an outdoor space while still providing privacy, or by installing doors and windows that open all the way up to let the outdoors in.

If the indoor/outdoor bathroom design doesn’t appeal to you or isn’t really an option, then simply having extra large windows installed will really allow a lot of natural light to enter the room during the day.

More natural light will also help to prevent the growth of mould and mildew, making for a much cleaner and healthier space.

Artificial Lighting Ideas

When planning a bathroom renovation, the selection of the light fittings can really actually be quite fun. Lighting is everything, really. It helps to set the tone and the mood of the room, while at the same time providing light for you to adequately see by.

If it’s within your budget, a good idea is to have several different types of lighting installed. Obviously you will need some bright light to be able to see by when shaving, applying make up and that sort of thing, but you don’t always want to be bathed in bright light when you are taking a bath or a shower.

Having lights fitted with a dimmer switch can achieve the low light effect. Another option is to have lower wattage lights fitted that have frosted or coloured shades on them. A common trend at the moment is the smoky glass look, which adds an ambient orange/brown tinge to the light. It’s subtle and it’s relaxing, so well worth considering.

A third option to achieve the compromise between bright light and soft light would be to place a lamp in a strategic part of the bathroom (away from water sources), to give the option of low light ambience with the main light switched off.
