Interior design, decor and the overall look of your home is often determined by your design style. Let’s face it, we are all a little different. Some people naturally have great taste, while others, not so good. What design style are you?
Take a Quiz
Many of the architectural and interior design websites offer simple and fun quizzes that you can take to determine your very own unique design style. While it’s not necessary to take one of these quizzes, the results could prove very interesting.
Let’s now take a look at some of the more common design styles out there.
The Classic
Classic design style often has a European influence, originating from Victorian and Art Deco design cultures, as well as Greek and Roman. The classics usually involve articles rich in detail, beautifully crafted and refined. It is generally arty in nature and will regularly involve floral designs with carved and inlaid details.
Modern Minimalist
This is a very common style in the modern world and will be found in many homes, and especially executive office spaces. Shapes are round, square or rectangle. There is either very little colour or, at the opposite end of the spectrum, vivid colours. Minimalist designs usually come with little to no detail. Surfaces will be clean and flat. It’s simple, but functional and effective.
The Rustic Style
As the name suggests, the rustic style tends to be more at one with nature. Unlike the minimalistic design style, where everything is smooth and geometric in shape, rustic furniture, decorations and fittings are often anything but smooth or streamline. Materials such as timber, stone and granite are favoured by those with a penchant for the rustic style. Colours are earthy and sometimes quite dark.
Retro
The retro look has seriously been making a comeback in recent times; whether it be for clothing, household appliances, or home design. The retro period tends to refer to the eras of the 50s, 60s and especially the 70s, where conservative style went flying out the window. Many of the colours and designs are of the Pop Art design, with geometric shapes and plaid, and colour schemes often bright and, dare I say, garish. Still, the retro style can really look quite effective in a modern home; particularly if just the one select room is decked out this way.
Modern Contemporary
Somewhat similar to the modern minimalistic, in that the lines are clean and often straight, modern contemporary is hard to beat as it doesn’t tend to date nearly as quickly as some other design styles. Wood, leather, polished panels and neutral, earthy colours are dominant in this style.
