The Most Common Bathroom Renovation Mistakes

July 5, 2017

If you are planning to embark on a bathroom renovation project, then you will want to avoid the errors that will cost you both extra time and money. In this post we’ll cover some of the more common bathroom renovation mistakes and how not to make them.

Lack of Proper Planning

Failure to plan is planning to fail.

Most of us have heard that expression. Any project undertaken with a plan always works out better than having no plan at all. If the idea is to perform a bathroom renovation yourself, then it’s wise to take the time to plan it; including everything from the timeline, budget, materials used, sequence of events, which tradies to hire and so on.

Blowing the Budget

Two main things will blow a bathroom renovation budget. One is to overspend on items by upgrading to more expensive options. The second, not factoring into your budget unexpected costs. And there will always be those. Work out your budget before you start anything else and do your best to stick to it. Add at least 10% for unexpected costs.

Using Up Too Much Space

Being over-exuberant about the prospect of a brand new bathroom, rushing into the process and ordering larger than life items could just end up filling up the bathroom to a point where there is no space left. Open space is luxurious, far more comfortable, as well as pleasing to the eye. You don’t want to turn a big bathroom into a small one by filling it up with a spa bath that simply takes up too much room, or jamming in a laundry area where there wasn’t one before.

Poor Drainage

Common in DIY bathroom renovations is poor drainage. If you are carrying out the renovations, then be sure to hire a plumber to do all the piping and drainage, or at least advise you on the best course of action. Poor drainage will just lead to flooding and water damage.

Choosing the Wrong Fixtures and Fittings

You want to select taps, spouts, towel racks, shower heads, lighting, tiles and vanity units that are timeless in their colour and design. The last thing you want are items that will date quickly, leaving you with a bathroom that’s an embarrassment in a few years time.

Using Porous Materials

Cheap and porous tiles, grout, timber on the vanity and counter tops will lead to permanent staining. Selecting finishes that are stain resistant is the way to go to ensure a bathroom stays looking new for many years.

Lack of Storage Space

Plan your storage space to perfection. Choose cabinets, vanities or storage shelves that make the most of available space. This avoids clutter everywhere, making the room neater and appear bigger.

Not Waterproofed Correctly

Another common error from DIY home renovators. Do your homework on this. Get the waterproofing aspect wrong and you are in for a world of hurt. Not to mention expensive repair bills.
